KALAMAZOO, Mich.— Nicole Sherman, a Western Michigan University supply chain management student from Lake Orion, Michigan, is among six students from across the country to receive a nationwide business scholarship awarded by the Richter Foundation and the Institute for Supply Management's Richter Scholarship Fund.

The R. Gene Richter Scholarship, an award presented annually to the top supply management students from across the United States, provides up to $15,000 toward tuition. Recipients are determined based upon a submitted essay, cumulative grade point average, demonstrated leadership, extracurricular involvement and overall achievements as an undergraduate professional, including internships and case competitions.

This prestigious recognition is a testament to both Nicole's hard work and the robust nature of our program,” says Dr. Marcel Zondag, director of the supply chain management program. “Nicole has consistently demonstrated exceptional academic prowess and a keen ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. Our program's unique blend of rigorous academic theory, practical application and strong industry collaboration plays a pivotal role in growing talents like Nicole. These elements not only help our students excel during their time with us but also set them up for remarkable success in their careers after graduation."

Majoring in supply chain management with minors in business analytics and general business, Sherman has been on the dean’s list her entire college career. She is the president of the Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA) and was previously the excellence director for Women Impacting Supply Chain Excellence (WISE) for SCMA. Sherman has completed two supply chain internships, one with General Dynamics Land Systems as a procurement intern and another with Aptiv as a product line purchasing intern.

“Receiving the Richter Scholarship means so much to me on a personal, professional and financial level,” says Sherman. “It’s a powerful reminder that the time and effort I’ve dedicated to my studies and activities outside the classroom have truly made a difference. Receiving this scholarship opens doors to new opportunities, connecting me to a network of amazing scholars and mentors that I’m excited to learn from and contribute to. The award has given my academic and career journey a real boost and will be beneficial when applying for jobs in the future.”

A standout in the classroom and co-curricular activities, Sherman exemplifies the professionalism of the Western supply chain management program.

“Nicole represents the very best of our program—not just through her flawless academic record but also through her leadership and passion for supply chain management,” says Dr. Sime Curkovic, professor of supply chain management. “She co-founded our WISE student group, connecting students with industry and inspiring young women to pursue leadership roles in the field. She is the kind of student who makes everyone around her better. This award reflects not only her talent but the lasting impact she’s had on our program and culture."

Sherman credits her peers and professors with helping her to excel.

“The supply chain management program has helped shape my path by giving me both hands-on experience and opportunities to grow as a leader,” she says. “My roles in supply chain student organizations have allowed me to build confidence, improve my communication skills and learn how to solve problems in real time. In the classroom, case studies to real-world projects have helped me apply supply chain concepts, with faculty members always willing to offer guidance, share their industry knowledge and encourage me to take on new challenges. All of this has prepared me for what’s ahead. I’ve gained the skills, experience and mindset I need to succeed in the supply chain field.”

Sherman’s advice to fellow students is simple. “Get involved in student organizations. The growth and knowledge you gain from student groups is something that can kickstart your professional career. I am extremely grateful to the Supply Chain Management Association for helping me grow into the person I am today and know that my experiences in the organization have helped me to be competitive for opportunities like this scholarship.”
